The History of the Chastang Dam – A Giant Serving Green Energy

The Chastang Dam was inaugurated in 1951 by EDF, as part of an ambitious project for the production of hydraulic energy.

This 80-meter-high, 31-kilometer-long dam plays a key role in renewable energy production, transforming the power of water into electricity for thousands of homes. It is not only a power generation tool, but also a symbol of industrial innovation and the energy transition.

The site is also a place of discovery. By visiting the dam, you will be able to understand not only its technical functioning but also the impact of hydroelectricity on the environment, nature, and the daily lives of the inhabitants of the Dordogne Valley.

In a few figures, the Chastang Dam is:

  • 31 km of water reservoir, the equivalent of 75,000 Olympic swimming pools
  • 3 turbines of 50 tonnes each, producing the electricity needed by 186,000 inhabitants each year
